Fear not the startup, but the cashed-up company behaving like one

Businesses of yesterday are reinventing themselves

In recent years, startups around the world have disrupted the business models of established organisations almost overnight.

Think Airbnb, Uber and Lemonade.

I was recently the opening keynote for a Technology Leadership event in New Zealand for cloud services specialists Umbrellar. Whilst I was there, I got to chat to the team, and talk about how business reinventing itself is more than just about technology. It’s a deep transformation where everything is up for being challenged, including culture.

Here is the article from CIO Magazine where I share my latest insights on what true transformation actually means.

The revolution that will change how we live within 30 years

Access to ultra-fast networks will be crucial

In 1988, if you wanted to speak to someone overseas, you would dial a number (literally – dial) on a phone attached to the wall and struggle to hear to a crackly voice on the other end – all while paying through the nose for the call.

Fast forward 30 years, and you can now speak face to face with your loved ones through a smartphone from pretty much anywhere, and it won’t add a cent to your regular phone bill.

It begs the question – if technology has come so far since the 80s, where will it be in another 30 years, and more importantly, how will it change the way we live?

It takes just seconds, the doors slide open and you’re off. It’s almost a shame to not get the stamps in your passport anymore.

Intelligence led policing is augmented

We can send man to the moon, we have cars that can drive themselves, and we have devices in our pockets that have an insane amount of capability, and connect us to almost every human being on planet earth.

With the advances in robotics, and cognitive computer technology you would be right in believing we are on the very edge of one of the most intelligent tipping points humanity has ever seen.

Yet, when it comes to human conflict and behaviour, we are fighting a war which we have little honest understanding of, and whilst broadly our security agencies succeed in preventing the majority of the incidents – predicting them is still something we have not yet mastered. If we want to get into true prevention, we must get predictive.
